Egg
Challenge Game
The end idea for this game is that each group of students will
have an egg (not hard boiled) and that when it is dropped from a height of
(10-20ft, nearer 20ft is better if possible) the egg will survive.
To achieve this each group has a chance of winning materials
that they can use to protect their egg in any way they wish, i.e. they
might decide to create a parachute.
Suggested Materials for Prizes:
Egg Cups
String
Scissors (Depending on age)
Bubble Wrap
Newspaper
Bin Liners
Sticky Tape
Tissue
Plastic Cups (A necessity)
Any other you think appropriate, but sticky tape should only
be given out just before they all start their building to protect their
egg.
How it works.
- Split
the large group into smaller group of 5/6 depending on group size. You
should have 7/8 groups in total. It may be a good idea to insist that
each group must have a certain number of boys and a certain number of
girls.
- Each
group is given a plastic carrier bag to start with to hold their
winnings. Each group is then sent to a different station to play a
game (see below for ideas). For example, group 1 could goto station 1.
Once the game has been played (games should last no more than 7
minutes to avoid boredom) the adult supervising that game gives them a
prize depending on how well they did and how hard the group tried. (NB
each game should only have one prize not a selection)
- Having
finished the first game, the groups move around to the next station,
so group 1 goes to station 2 and so on.
- After
all the games have been played by each group (should take about 50
minutes) everyone must meet back at the assembly point. The area must
be large enough for each group
to have their own space to work. The groups are then each given an egg
and in 15/20 minutes must design a way using the materials they have
won to protect the egg when it is dropped.
- When
the time is up an adult must drop each egg in turn from the same
height and then see if it is broken. This part of the game may be
added to by the other adults being judges and giving points based on
style, team effort, damage done etc. The team that gets the most
points from the judges is declared the winner.
